Bibleblack: The black swan epilogue

07/05/09  ||  GardensTale

Mike Wead sat on a stool in a small, dark, wooden room. A heavy crimson curtain shut off most light from the opening, what was left was a reddish glow. A sound from the other side of the panel to his left, a man coming in and sitting down. A shuffle, a cough, and then the man on the other side asked: “What troubles you, my son?”
“I need your guidance, Father,” Mike said. “I have great plans to spread the Fate but I don’t know the way.”

“Start at the beginning,” the man Mike called Father said. “What are your plans?”
“I am one of the men who continued the Mercyful Fate, Father. My guitar helped instill the darkness in many and the Fate spread like arson through a Christian church, though I arrived after its peak years. But the Fate is on hold, and I still intend to spread the Fate, this time through a new band. But I do not know how to instill the darkness in our followers and not copy the Fate.”
“You know the right path,” the man said. “Thou shalt not become a copy of the Fate, as it says in the Bible Black, for thine followers shall have thine eyes and shun thee for the trespassing. But there are more ways, my son. Have you heard of the Septic Flesh?”
“I have heard of the Flesh,” Mike said, “but I have not heard their sermons.”
“They know how to combine the darkness of the Black Metal, the weight of the Death Metal and the melody and variety needed not to lose followers throughout the sermon,” the Father mused. “You should listen to their sermons, especially the latest one.”

Mike said in silence for a while, pensive. “But Father,” he said finally, “the way you describe the Flesh, they sound like… melodic death metal.”
A shuffling sound as the Father shrugged. “In a way,” he nodded, “they are. In a way, much more. But the darkness can be instilled in many ways, son. What would you desire in this new band?”
“Oh, uhm…” Mike was caught off-guard and he thought quickly about what he wanted in the band. “Well, I want a rhythm section similar to that in the Fate, but I want it to sound, I don’t know, mighty and epic. Orchestral maybe. Also, I did ever enjoy playing the solos, so I wish to make enough use of them as well. I wish it to have more speed and aggression than the Fate, but create the darkness similarly.”

“The effects of the orchestral sound, my son, can be great if used well, but I must heed not to let it overwhelm the core. What about the vocals, my son? Any throughts?”
“Oh, I think with the more aggressive sound, black metal screams will have the most effect, mixed with an occasional clean section or whispering.”
“So, you intend to play your sermons aggressive yet epic, and instill the darkness still?” the Father asked. “This will stand or fall with good songwriting, my son. Listen to the new sermon of the Septic Flesh, follow their example, but remember the Bible Black: thou shalt not ignore thine origins, for such is a crime to thine musical heritage as well as thine integrity. Combine the darkness of old with the power of young, my son, and you will succeed.”
“Thank you, Father. I know what I must do now.” He looked to his left. Through the holes in the panel, he could barely make out a face lined in black in white, a tophat tipped forward on his head, grinning maliciously. The light through the curtain colored his face blood-red.

“Go, my son, and spread the darkness.”
